Meeting: Tuesday, 20 May 2014

Perseverance was the theme of today’s meeting, hosted by Toastmaster Eric.

President Brenda opened with meeting with comments about the perseverance of high achievers such as David Beckham, Lorde and Lydia Ko and drawing parallels with the efforts of toastmasters as they strive to develop their speaking and leadership skills.

The Club held its annual business meeting (a requirement for all toastmaster clubs). We heard from Brenda, reporting on the club’s performance (membership at 20 by 30 June and six or seven goals achieved out of a possible 10) and Treasurer Jo about the cub’s good financial position. The committee elections were held for the coming year and the new team leading the club is: President Clinton Jones, VP Education Marieke van der Heijden, VP Membership Steve Daly, Treasurer Marlene Krone, Secretary Ruth Turnbull and Sergeant at arms (for life) John van Doormal. The VP PR role is vacant at this time

Grammarian Phil’s word of the day was tenacious. Steve Daly, a late substitute in the table topics role challenged Samwell, Malcolm and Paul to take on different personas (John Banks, Lou Vincent and Len Brown).

After the break we learned all about television advertising and how advertisers decide what shows to advertise in. Thanks Bianca. Jo then stepped us through the process of bringing a new product – Freya’s Low Carb bread – to market.  Both speeches were informative and entertaining and while the subjects could have been heavy going, Bianca and Jo have the knack of simplifying complex material.

Clinton and John delivered their evaluations, and John set a record for the number of recommendations – six! Next time aim for three :-)

Visitors Tonya and Kimberley indicated that they would be joining Central Park Toastmasters, making for four new members in the last couple of months.

Next meeting: Tuesday 3 June.
