Educational programme


The programme is founded on four guiding principles :

  1. Experiential Learning – learning by doing;  giving speeches and fulfilling leadership roles
  2. Self-paced Programme – we learn best at our own pace and comfort level
  3. Peer Feedback – growth through honest and supportive peer evaluation
  4. Mentoring –  encouragement, guidance and support from experienced members

The programme comprises of two tracks:

Communication Track

New members interested in building their public speaking and communication skills begin with the Competent Communication manual. This manual contains 10 speech projects each focusing on a specific area, such as organising your speech and using body language. An evaluator offers feedback on each of your speeches, helping you to improve. Earn a Competent Communicator award by completing all the speech projects in Competent Communication. After receiving this award, you can begin to develop more advanced speaking and communication skills through the Advanced Communication Series manuals.

Leadership Track

The Competent Leadership manual features 10 projects that you complete while serving in various club meeting roles. An evaluator will give you feedback on each project, helping you to improve. When you complete the manual, you are eligible for the Competent Leader award. After earning the Competent Leadership award, you can further refine and develop more complex leadership skills by completing projects in manuals that are part of the Advanced Leader Programme.

Distinguished Toastmaster Award (DTM)

This award recognises a superior level of achievement in both communication and leadership. To be eligible for the award, you must have earned the following:

  1. Advanced Communicator Gold or Advanced Toastmaster Gold award
  2. Advanced Leader Silver or Advanced Leader award
